Hardebeck saw the advantages to local factories from the nearby Illinois Central Railroad.

He purchased about 1,000 acres of farmland and planned the area to be an industrial addition to the city of Kankakee. On August 27, 1891, a local newspaper carried the headline: A Big Boom Turned Loose This Week in North Kankakee. When the city of Kankakee refused to accept what was then called North Kankakee as a subdivision, the inhabitants of North Kankakee decided to incorporate as a separate village.

For two years the village boomed as new industries located there. Then, in 1893 a national financial crisis caused many banks and businesses to fail. Hard times bankrupt most of North Kankakee factories. But Hardebeck did not give up on his dream. In 1895 he finally convinced David Bradley to relocate his farm implement factory from Chicago to North Kankakee. In gratitude the name of the village was changed to Bradley. The book contains a section devoted to excerpts from village board meetings including the names of elected and appointed village officials from 1892 to 1987.
